Is Your Heating System Ready for Winter? Here's What to Check

Every fall, Southern NJ homeowners face the same question: is my heating system actually ready for winter? The good news is that a little preparation now can save you from a cold house — and a costly emergency repair — in January.

Here's a practical checklist you can run through before the temperatures drop.

1. Replace Your Air Filter

A clogged filter is the number one cause of reduced heating efficiency. If you haven't changed your filter since spring, now is the time. Most homes need a new filter every 1–3 months depending on usage and whether you have pets.

A clean filter means your furnace doesn't have to work as hard, which lowers your energy bill and extends the life of your system.

2. Test Your Thermostat

Switch your thermostat to heat mode and set it a few degrees above room temperature. Does the furnace kick on within a minute or two? If it doesn't respond, you may have a wiring issue, a dead battery, or a failing thermostat.

Smart thermostats can also help you save on heating costs — if you're still using an older model, it might be worth an upgrade.

3. Listen for Unusual Noises

When your furnace starts up, pay attention. Banging, rattling, squealing, or popping sounds are all signs that something may be wrong — loose components, a failing blower motor, or ignition issues. Don't ignore these. Catching a small problem now is far cheaper than a breakdown in February.

4. Check Your Vents and Registers

Walk through your home and make sure all supply and return vents are open and unobstructed. Furniture, rugs, and drapes blocking vents force your system to work harder and can cause uneven heating throughout the house.

5. Inspect the Area Around Your Furnace

Clear any clutter, boxes, or flammable materials from around your furnace or boiler. There should be at least two feet of clearance on all sides. Also check that the pilot light (if applicable) is burning blue — a yellow or orange flame can indicate a combustion issue.

6. Look at Your Flue Pipe

If you have a gas furnace, check the flue pipe for visible rust, holes, or disconnected sections. A compromised flue can allow carbon monoxide to enter your home — a serious safety hazard.

7. Test Your Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Speaking of carbon monoxide: test every CO detector in your home and replace batteries if needed. CO is odorless and colorless, and a malfunctioning furnace is one of the most common sources. If your detectors are more than 5–7 years old, replace them.

8. Schedule a Professional Tune-Up

Even if everything looks fine to the naked eye, a professional HVAC tune-up catches problems you can't see — a cracked heat exchanger, a failing igniter, or a gas valve that's not operating correctly.

A licensed technician will clean the burners, check the heat exchanger, test safety controls, measure combustion efficiency, and give you a full diagnostic report. It's the single best thing you can do to protect your family and your heating system before winter.
